Creativity, Reimagined.
The word ‘creative’ has always been an interesting point of contention for me. Even though I was a dancer growing up, I never thought of myself as a creative person. I always assumed that being creative meant being able to draw or paint well, write beautiful stories, or make art. After I left Sri Lanka, I moved into the business IT field and have been there ever since, further reinforcing the idea that I wasn’t a creative person.
In the last few years, I’ve been incredibly grateful to have my perspective changed. Creativity can show up in so many different ways. For example, in my job, I am constantly tasked with coming up with solutions to problems—what could be called creative problems. I’ve also learned to stop overthinking what I’m doing and whether it’s right or wrong.
I remember one plane ride back to the U.S. when I started thinking about patterns in my head and imagining how I’d love to incorporate them into my future dream home. I took out a piece of paper, drew different-sized boxes, and began filling them with ideas for art pieces I could make. It was such a freeing exercise. I had always believed that because I couldn’t draw, I shouldn’t try. But what I realized is that I do love being creative—it just might be in my own unique way.
Realizing that there is no “right” or “wrong,” no “normal” way to be creative, was the start of the best years of my life. Letting go of the limitations I had placed on myself and stepping outside the box I had confined myself to has been transformative.
In my own journey, I’ve come to understand that creativity is about more than making things—it's about thinking in new ways. In my IT role, for instance, problem-solving is an inherently creative process. It's about recognizing patterns, imagining possibilities, and finding innovative solutions. Likewise, creativity can be seen in how we connect with others, how we lead, and how we navigate life’s challenges. Creativity isn’t a single, fixed thing; it’s a wide-ranging experience that shows up in many different aspects of our lives.
